Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining Your Ethiopian Professionals Network (YEP) for an engaging and eye-opening session: From Diaspora Dreams to U.S. Business Ownership.

The conversation was filled with energy, practical insights, and meaningful discussions that matter deeply for aspiring and established Ethiopian entrepreneurs in the U.S.

What We Explored

During the session, we walked through some of the most important considerations for anyone in the diaspora who is thinking about business ownership, investment, or long-term growth in the U.S.:

  • 💡 Buying vs. Starting from Scratch — why acquiring an existing business can often be a smarter and safer path than building from the ground up.

  • 💡 Diverse Financing Options — the different sources of funding available to help entrepreneurs start or scale their companies.

  • 💡 Investor Visa Pathways — practical insights into programs like E-2 and EB-5 that connect business ownership with opportunities in the U.S.

  • 💡 Leadership Competencies — the mindset and skills every entrepreneur must develop to succeed and leave a lasting impact.

And perhaps most exciting, we uncovered one of the most neglected yet extraordinary financing options that many in the diaspora often overlook — a strategy that could open new doors for entrepreneurs willing to think differently.

Why It Matters

Several colleagues who attended told me that the session was both dynamic and eye-opening. The feedback reminded me that exposure itself is powerful. Even if someone isn’t ready to take action immediately, simply knowing what is possible can:

  • Spark an idea worth thousands — or even millions — in the future

  • Equip you to guide children, relatives, or community members
