07 Feb Investing in Yourself and Your People Has Exponential Returns Without Downside
Last night, in a 1-on-1 coaching session with a young professional in a technical field, we were working on his presentation skills both in person & virtual settings. One of the compliments I gave him for taking this rewarding journey to invest in this non-technical skill was, ‘You made a smart & strategic investment with exponential returns.’
I further elaborated:
1. If you kept this money in your bank account, it wouldn’t even give you a 1% return.
2. If you invested it in a stock market, there is a risk you may lose all or a portion of your investment. Even if it succeeds, on average, you only get 8 – 10 % return annually.
3. If you invested the coaching fees into real estate investments, you may earn a 15 – 20 % return yearly.
The return is exponential since you invested this money in yourself and to improve your soft skills! Better than any other investment vehicle…
I continued:
1. As you improve your communication competencies, you become a better sibling, son, spouse, father, coworker, etc. How much price can you put on this? Priceless!
2. With improved communication abilities comes unshakable confidence; with that comes bold moves and stepping up to apply for promotions, leadership positions, or even opening your own company. Think about this: One minor promotion may give you 100 % or more return on your investment in this coaching program.
As you can see, when we invest in ourselves, there is no downside. What is more? The returns are higher than any other investment opportunity. They’re priceless and limitless, depending on how committed you are to taking the learning seriously, going out to practice, and continuing to improvise…
Here is a simple rule you may consider. Don’t invest in any other investment opportunities before investing in yourself. This investment should take priority. Of course, this isn’t investment advice. Consult your financial or investment advisor for investment-related advice. I’m also not here saying that there are no other investment opportunities that may give you a higher return than investing in you and your people.
It’s your turn. Let me ask you:
1. Are you investing in yourself and your team regularly?
2. What areas of your (your team’s) development are you now working on?
3. What vehicles of learning are you using to continuously grow individually and corporately?
3.1. Reading books?
3.2. Attending conferences?
3.3. Signing up for online courses?
3.4. Taking a formal education program?
3.5. Coaching?
3.6. A mix of some of these?
3.7. How much % of your annual revenue goes to develop yourself and your people?
