What Does It Take to Be a Successful Negotiator

Successful professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders refine their negotiation skills proactively and intentionally.

These are the only ones excelling and making win-win deals without giving in quickly, appearing cutthroat, and damaging relationships.

Success in any industry requires us to go out every day wearing our negotiator hats. It demands using every opportunity to get what we want while still maintaining good relationships and without appearing aggressive.

Becoming a skillful negotiator requires the following:

  1. Developing the right mentality about negotiating.
  2. Acquiring the necessary competencies.
  3. Forming a solid character.
  4. Using workable farmwork and practical approaches.

Speaking of using a framework, there are many frameworks out there that you could use to guide you throughout the negotiation process. Let me quickly share some of the approaches you may consider when you negotiate next:

  1. Threat the other party with respect and dignity.
  2. Give them freedom to walk away.
  3. Know your own bottom-line and if possible, the walking away price of the other party.
  4. Enlarge the pie and get what you want.
  5. Walk away if necessary. As much as you give the other party autonomy to walk away, do yourself a favor and dare say no.
