My Trip to Columbus OH to Facilitate a Strategic Planning Session

Renaissance Hotel Columbus, OH.

Last week, I was in Columbus, Ohio. Columbusshares many things with the DMV area, one of which is that many Ethiopians live in the city.

The primary purpose of my travel was to facilitate a strategic planning session. However, during off-hours, I had a chance to visit some places, including eating delicious Ethiopian food with a colleague.

While there, I also checked the state of commercial real estate and business brokerage in the city. Not just in Columbus, OH, but in any city, the following are some of the factors to investigate before investing:

  1. Employment growth
  2. Population growth
  3. Demographic trends
  4. Interest rates/mortgage rates
  5. Valuations/cap rates/net rental yields
  6. Inventory

In this regard, Columbus, Ohio, is one of the top US cities with better growth rates that are inviting to investors.

Coming back to the strategic planning session mentioned above, facilitating a strategic planning session is one of my favorite facilitation styles.

Let me expand on the different styles we employ as we serve our diverse clients:

  1. Our clients have diverse needs that require different delivery formats and styles.
  2. Some of our clients ask us to deliver two-hour to 1-day webinars virtually.
  3. Still others need in-person workshops that range from 1 – 3 days.
  4. Others still request long-term programs ranging from 6 – 12 months.
  5. Like our client in Columbus, OH, some of our clients invite us to facilitate strategic planning sessions.

Of course, all these programs are designed based on the latest adult learning principles.

However, because of the audience’s development stage and the theme, our programs may be delivered differently.

For instance, unlike when we deliver webinars or workshops for emerging or middle leaders, when we facilitate workshops and webinars designed for senior leaders, and when we lead a strategic planning session, we:

  • Speak less, allowing participants to speak more, share their thoughts, stories, and perspectives, and ask questions.
  • Focus more on asking thoughtful questions.
  • Help the audience connect the dots.
  • Assist them in recognizing trends and patterns, and so on.

If you have any development needs for your emerging, middle, or senior leaders, reach out, and we would love to empower your people.
