03 Mar Leadership Transitions (video)
One of the neglected areas in leadership development is Leadership Transitions. Companies promote their A players who outperform their peers to become supervisors, team leaders, or project managers without properly empowering them- before or immediately after promoting them- to make a smooth transition and excel in their new first-time role.
The same thing happens when they find very successful supervisors. They promote them to lead a portfolio, function, or department consisting of multiple teams and projects without equipping them to transition from just leading one project or team to multiple projects or teams, some of which may have different priorities and even conflicts of interest.
Likewise, when someone becomes a star middle leader, they promote them to become an executive or even a CEO without supporting them to excel from the get-go. They let them figure it out by themselves and make the mindset shift, develop the necessary executive-level competencies, and the personality it takes to communicate, collaborate, assert, and lead diverse stakeholders within and outside the organization…
It sickens me to witness organizations throwing their first-time leaders into deep water to see whether they swim or sink. The data is very brutal for first-time leaders at all levels. Many are failing (sinking…)
