14 Nov Leadership Begins With Defining Reality
Why Courageously Naming What’s True Is the First Step Toward Real Change
Every leadership expert agrees on one thing: The first duty of a leader is to define reality.
You can’t transform what you refuse to acknowledge.
In my work as a coach and consultant, I’ve seen leaders respond in very different ways when the obvious is named.
☑️ Some get uncomfortable.
☑️ Some change the subject.
☑️ Some walk around the bush.
☑️ Some become defensive—or even attack the person who states the truth.
But real leaders act differently:
☑️ They have the courage to see things as they are,
☑️ Admit the obvious,
☑️ Take responsibility, and
☑️ Then take action to shape the future they want.
Avoiding the obvious never solves anything.
A simple example: If a homeowner refuses to admit the roof is leaking, the damage doesn’t disappear. It grows.
Leadership works the same way—Point A must be acknowledged before Point B is possible.
☑️ You can’t solve what you’re unwilling to define.
☑️ You can’t improve what you refuse to see.
☑️ And you certainly can’t lead change while hiding from the truth.
True leadership begins with courage—the courage to name reality so you can change it.
