Beyond the Surface: Mastering the Highest Level of Listening

Ever tried to listen to what’s not being said?
When I coach or lead workshops on communication, I often role-play to demonstrate the three levels of listening. But there’s one level I can’t replicate in a role play—because it goes beyond words.

The highest level of listening isn’t about nodding along or repeating what someone said. It’s about tuning in with both your mind and heart—listening for the unspoken doubts, concerns, or uncertainties someone, for whatever reason, may not be ready (or able) to express.

In my latest video, I share a true story where this deeper kind of listening made all the difference. A colleague connected me with an executive at a major Ethiopian company, believing it would be a great opportunity. But from our emails and even our first meeting, I sensed hesitation—something wasn’t quite right.

Instead of pushing forward, I leaned into this deeper level of listening.  It altered the entire direction of our conversation and turned things around completely. What I uncovered changed everything. I addressed the unspoken concern before it was voiced—and that shifted the entire conversation.
