Navigating Decisions with Heart, Mind, and Data

We often talk about emotional intelligence (EQ) and intuition as “soft skills,” but here’s the truth: Both are muscles that strengthen with practice—and both require nuance to wield effectively.

1️⃣ EQ Isn’t About Controlling Emotions—It’s About Managing Them

A common myth? Trying to “fix” emotions with more emotion (e.g., suppressing anger or forcing positivity). This backfires. Why? Emotions are signals, not problems to solve.

The key lies in engaging your neocortex—the advanced, rational part of your brain. Ask: “What is this emotion telling me?” and “How can I respond constructively?” This shifts you from reaction to intention.

2️⃣ Intuition ≠ Magic. It’s Earned.

I often advise emerging leaders: “Trust your gut, but verify with data.” Why? Intuition matures with experience. Early in your career, patterns and “gut feelings” lack the depth of context. Validate hunches with research, feedback, or historical data. Even seasoned leaders should reserve intuition for:

Decisions with incomplete/no data

Time-sensitive scenarios (but even then, lean on frameworks).

💡 The Bottom Line

EQ and intuition are powerful, but they’re not shortcuts. Mastery starts with self-awareness, grows with deliberate practice, and thrives on humility.
