Long before I ever set foot in the United States, this young nation, 249 years old, captured my imagination.

Its ideals…

Its resilience…

Its bold spirit of innovation and creativity…

I vividly remember studying U.S. history well before 2005. As someone deeply passionate about leadership, I found myself drawn to the lives and legacies of America’s presidents, and a few stood above the rest.

As we celebrate Independence Day, I want to honor one of my top favorites: Abraham Lincoln.

Abe didn’t rise through privilege…

He rose through principle…

What made Lincoln different?

1. Moral Courage Over Popularity. He stood for justice, even when it was unpopular and risky. Abolishing slavery came at great political and personal cost- but Lincoln chose purpose over comfort, conviction over convenience.

2. Clarity in Crisis. At a time when the nation was torn apart, Lincoln didn’t just manage conflict; he pointed the way toward healing, unity, and a higher national calling.

3. Ego-Free Leadership: Power with Humility. Lincoln did what few leaders dare: he brought his fiercest political rivals into his cabinet. He believed the country deserved the best minds, not just the most loyal voices. This remarkable story is captured in Doris Kearns Goodwin’s powerful biography, Team of Rivals.

Lincoln didn’t just lead the country. He elevated even those who once opposed him.

That kind of leadership is timeless.

It reminds us what’s possible when vision, character, and humility align.
