How Do You Prevent Stressing Out if You’re a High Performer

If you’re a high performer, how do you prevent yourself from crossing the working hard zone to the stressing out zone?

For many years, I struggled to catch myself when I crossed the delicate line that separates high performance from stressing out. As a result, I paid some dire prices until I dealt with this weakness.

Once I realized what was happening in the background, it became easier to recognize when I left the high-performance territory for high-stress space. However, I didn’t have smart approaches to prevent it from happening and quickly recover once it occurred.

Now, I have some workable strategies and tactics I use never to come close to the delicate line. One of my strategies is to take a major break on a daily basis.

  • Rather than waiting until the weekend to wind down and start over, I insert a major break daily.
  • Rather than waiting to sleep and wake up to reset my mood, I take a break that helps me start all over again the same day.

I’ve also employed some tactics (mini-breaks) that help me refresh myself multiple times per day.

I use my daily major break to connect with people via phone while walking close to nature (in the woods or nearby water), meeting in person to break bread, or listening to an audiobook or a podcast.

Here is a brief video clip I captured yesterday in the woods.
