In this clip, I proposed four recommendations to tap into & leverage the learning industry for economic transformation.

I was born & raised in Ethiopia. I’m a learning professional who has:

1. Authored six books

2. Over a decade of practical experience in the US, coaching and training leaders of government agencies, major corporations, and community organizations.

Given my experience in this industry, hopefully, some of these proposals may be taken as a starting point to elevate this sector:

1. Establishing associations for Speakers, Consultants, and Coaches. We need self-regulatory and advocacy associations that promote on behalf of their members. These platforms can create opportunities to help members grow, collaborate, and succeed.

2. Opening Bureaus. It is a win-win for the professionals and the greater public. These bureaus can act as brokers and bridges between professionals and clients.

3. Training companies. As an infant industry, professionals who join this industry need support to meet the high ethics standards, competencies, and protocols required before they operate in this industry.

4. Unrestraining these professionals. I used the most popular phrase of Dawit Dreams: Equalizing 1 Birr to 1 USD. As a society that over-emphasizes & overspends on technical know-how and skills, it is no wonder why such a bold claim encountered so much resistance & pushback. To demonstrate the power of imagination & vision, I recounted the story of John F. Kennedy, who inspired & challenged both NASA & Congress to put a man on the Moon, knowing that the technology & know-how weren’t there to translate this extraordinary dream into reality.

We should stop GROUP Thinking! Those who achieved economic development in Asia mastered balancing the Individual & Community. They used to be like us, 100% communal, neglecting the INDIVIDUAL.

No team, organization, or nation will prosper by overriding INDIVIDUAL thinking, aspirations, & imaginations in the name of group consensus.

There is a powerful saying, “Nobody ever built a statue to a committee”. Individuals create, innovate, lead, & deliver results. Committees should be there to support such individuals. Not to leash, restrain, and force individuals to buy into GROUP THINKING.

I encourage government decision-makers and responsible ministries to facilitate the legal framework and guidelines that accelerate the advancement of this industry. Learning professionals and other stakeholders who care about this sector should also play their fair share in building and maturing this industry.
